What is Yoga?

Yoga is a Sanskrit word which means union. It is the union of our mind, body and spirit - and it is a practice. Most importantly though, yoga is a way of life. It is not simply a physical practice, on a mat, in a studio, whereby you can tone your body. And while with regular practice, you will indeed; tone your muscles, increase your flexibility, lower your blood pressure, increase circulation, clear your mind… you will gain so much more than that, if you learn yoga as a spiritual practice. Yoga is the path, the way to live a balanced, harmonious life. It teaches us discipline, self-care, self-love, non-judgement, compassion, strength, persistance and also surrender. It teaches us to breathe through difficulty and pain. It teaches us we can expand beyond what we perceive are our limitations. It teaches us that we are ever growing and changing. It teaches us that pain will pass. Yoga teaches us release, to let go of what is not good for us. it teaches us to listen to our bodies and our intuition. It teaches us to stop comparing and judging ourselves and others. Yoga teaches us every new day, every time we step onto our mat, is different, but it is showing up that matters most. There are over 2,000 poses (asanas) and at least 7 styles of yoga, so together we can create a yoga practice that is tailored to your own personal path.
