Demystifying Meditation

I think most of us in the West have a misconception of what meditation is. I’d like to begin by explaining to people what meditation is NOT.

Meditation is NOT:

  • Becoming like a monk living silently in a monastery, or chanting to oneself for hours on end. While there are some people who are interested in going to an ashram or a silent retreat, most of us are not seeking that immersive experience. We are all busy people living in an over-scheduled and overstimulated world. Meditation is a break – a much needed break for most of us.

  • Stopping our thoughts from coming. I like to explain it this way - it is our heart’s job to pump the blood, our lungs’ job to breathe the air and our brain’s job to think the thoughts. To try to stop thinking is NOT the goal- but to FOCUS and QUIET our thoughts is the goal.

Meditation is:

A PRACTICE that incorporates slowing down our breathing and focusing our mind. When we work together, individually or in a group setting, I begin every session by guiding you to slow down your breathing, especially the exhale. This is the most important and effective skill to learn because it initiates the “Relaxation Response,” a scientifically proven physiological process which lowers the heart rate & blood pressure, calming the nervous system while connecting with the brain to stop the production of stress hormones – all by the slowing down the breath. Then, once your body begins to relax, I guide you through a visualization meditation, which will focus your mind in a positive, empowering and deeply peaceful state.
